Hey Paul, good question! When I wrote this, I was basing it off an app that only read data from the server, and whose data didn't change more than once a day. If either of those are not the case in your app, you'll want a different approach (I'll write an update when I get some time to deal with these cases). For example, if you're dealing with real-time data (like a Facebook-type app), then you'd want to restrict your local cache to those items that don't change (interface-related data, etc.).

Can you explain something to me please? I noticed in your example you hash the query and use it as a key to get the data which is held client side if that call has already been made.

How does this allow for changes to the data server side? I could be wrong in what I think the code is doing however so if I am then sorry!

No, I haven't read that book. It looks fascinating--I need to add it to my summer reading list.

I recommend getting disqus comments. I was using Drupal's native commenting system and got killed with spam, so I switched. It's widely used (e.g., mashable), and it filters spam pretty damn well. You can also use FB connect and Twitter to post a comment. I know wordpress has a plugin.

Hey John,

Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.

>>Turn off registration!!

Haha, hey, yeah, I think it's turned off now, I was getting killed by spam when I first started this, so I added the registration thing. But I was still getting killed by fake registrations, so I added a spam filter on top of that, which put everyone's comments in spam (including yours). Now I've taken off registration and need to approve every comment, let's see how this goes...

Econova looks sweet. Have you read Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn? It's an amazing book about how our culture primes us to see the earth as an enemy to conquer - inevitably creating an unsustainable relationship.

Cheers,
~Micah

Hey Micah, this is John Richter. Fascinating thoughts.

It's pretty strange how my thoughts have been organically moving in this direction as well. (I've actually been casually researching HCI since senior year of college, and I'm strongly considering it as a future option in a MS program.)

I had a bevy of other insights when I first read this article like 2 weeks ago, but I'm drawing a blank. Turn off registration!!

If you're wondering, I periodically decide to stalk you, especially considering I'm reminded of your presence when I check my personal site's analytics and see someone has searched "micah herstand film" en route to one of my obscure pages.

P.S. Working on an environmental website @ www.econova.co
